Slow broadband? Simple fixes, and what to do next

Before you call your provider, try Ofcom's simple fixes. If speeds stay low, you may have the right to leave your contract without paying a penalty.

Quick answer: put your router somewhere open and raised, away from other electronics, and plug important devices in with an Ethernet cable. Run several speed tests at different times over a few days. If speeds stay below the minimum your provider promised, tell them. Under Ofcom's code, they have a month to fix it before you can leave penalty-free.

Fixes to try first

  1. Move your router

Ofcom suggests a table or shelf, not the floor or a cupboard, kept switched on. Keep it away from lamps, dimmer switches, fairy lights, TVs, speakers, cordless phones and baby monitors.

  2. Use a cable for important devices

An Ethernet cable is faster and steadier than Wi-Fi, especially for a work computer, games console or smart TV.

  3. Check your phone line setup

If your broadband comes through a phone line, plug the router into the main phone socket, use a microfilter and avoid extension leads.

  4. Restart the router

Switching it off and on clears temporary faults.

  5. Test properly

Run several speed tests over a few days, at different times, using a computer plugged in with a cable if you can. Ofcom-accredited comparison sites offer free speed tests.

Know your rights

Most big providers have signed up to Ofcom's broadband speeds code. Under the updated code, in force since 21 December 2022:

Contact your provider first and keep a note of your speed test results.

When it's time for an upgrade

If your connection is part fibre (sold as "superfast"), speeds depend on how far you are from the street cabinet, and no setting will change that. Full fibre runs all the way to your home, with speeds from 150Mbps and often matching upload speeds. See our broadband buying guide and what happens on installation day.

Time for faster broadband?

Full fibre plans with matching upload speeds and free installation, from £22 a month.

FAQs

Why is my broadband slow in the evening?

Evenings are the busiest time online, and everyone at home sharing the connection adds up. Several speed tests at different times show whether it's a real fault.

Is Wi-Fi slower than a cable?

Usually, yes. Walls, distance and other electronics weaken Wi-Fi. A cable gives the most accurate speed test and the steadiest connection.

Can I leave my contract if broadband is slow?

If your provider has signed up to Ofcom's speeds code and your speed falls below the minimum guaranteed speed, it has a month to fix it. If it can't, you can leave without paying a penalty.

Does the router's position really matter?

Yes. Ofcom recommends a raised, open spot away from other electronics. A router hidden in a cupboard or on the floor can struggle to reach other rooms.
