The quick answer
For most tablets and laptops, a standard SIM-only plan is the cheapest way to get mobile data. The calls and texts come free, and you only pay for the data. On the plans we list, 1pMobile has 50GB for £10 a month on a 30-day plan, and Asda Mobile has rolling plans from £5. Most networks no longer sell separate data-only plans, and none of the networks we compare does at the moment. Checked 5 November 2026.
Which network for which device?
| Device | What to look for | Good fit |
|---|---|---|
| iPad or Android tablet | A plan with enough data for streaming; an eSIM if your tablet supports it | 1pMobile, Asda Mobile |
| Laptop with a SIM slot | Check the slot size and that the laptop supports UK 4G/5G bands | Asda Mobile, 1pMobile |
| Mobile Wi-Fi (MiFi) or router | A network that allows its SIMs in routers, plus a fair use limit that suits home use | Check the network's terms first |
| Tracker, alarm or gate | Low data and low cost: pay-as-you-go often works out cheapest | 1pMobile (pay as you go from 1p per MB) |
1pMobile says its SIMs suit trackers, alarm systems, electronic gates and GPS devices. Asda Mobile explains how to use its SIMs in laptops. iD Mobile says its SIMs are designed for mobile phones and it can't guarantee them in a mobile Wi-Fi device.
